Statement: #BlackLivesMatter

New Economy Project condemns the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery, and the continued loss of Black life at the hands of the state. We mourn their deaths, and stand with all who are demanding justice and taking to the streets to protest anti-Black racism and police brutality.

Police violence is inextricably connected to economic violence that government and corporations perpetrate against Black people and communities, through redlining, exploitation, and austerity. As the COVID-19 pandemic has further laid bare, racial violence takes many forms and permeates our society.

We stand in solidarity with Black-led groups in their fight for survival and systemic transformation, for Black liberation. We will do our part to dismantle economic structures, institutions, and policies that are designed to systematically extract wealth from Black and Brown communities, and uphold white supremacy. We join in the call for the immediate defunding of the NYPD.

We recommit to fighting for a new economy, where Black people and communities have self-determination and control over housing, land, work, food; over life. We know another world is necessary and that we all will need to fight.
