Meet Celeste

New Economy Project is ever-grateful to our community of supporters. We’re delighted to introduce you to longtime supporter Celeste Day Moore, and share with you Celeste’s story of why she donates monthly to our organization.

My name is Celeste Day Moore. I’m excited to introduce myself and tell you why I support New Economy Project—and why I hope you will join me as a sustaining monthly donor.

Since 2014, I’ve been a history professor at Hamilton College in upstate New York, where I teach and write about African-American politics and culture, as well as the histories of race, empire, and capitalism in the United States. Growing up, my family was deeply involved in the community credit union movement in North Carolina, and I have grounded my own life’s work in social justice.

In fact, I spent my first three years after college working at New Economy Project, back in the day when it was the scrappy organization known as NEDAP. And last year, I decided to up my annual contribution and donate monthly. Let me tell you why.

First and foremost, I donate to New Economy Project because I know that the organization does amazing work, building powerful coalitions across New York City and State that fight for economic and racial justice. New Economy Project is pursuing a mission rooted in economic democracy and community control, working with grassroots groups to create urgently-needed institutions—like community land trusts, public banks, and community-owned energy—that build community wealth.

At the same time, New Economy Project is at the forefront of fighting for financial justice, challenging the systematic extraction of wealth from Black, brown, and immigrant New Yorkers and communities, through hard-hitting legal advocacy and organizing.

In these times especially, I believe in New Economy Project’s vision and unwavering dedication to ensuring that people have control over their housing, work, money, energy, and so much more. I donate because I know that the organization carries out all its work with integrity and has real impact. I stay connected because I know how much we need New Economy Project’s bold leadership and effectiveness. That’s why I support New Economy Project as a monthly sustainer and ask you to join me.

And I know that every dollar I donate is well spent. Even small monthly donations go a very long way at New Economy Project. Collectively, we can make a huge difference, providing solid funding to the organization and helping ensure its independence and continued success.
