(Archive) SIGN PETITION: Halt Debt Collection in NY Now!

Our team has been working remotely since the COVID-19 outbreak began in New York – feeling fortunate that we have that option. We are keeping our NYC Financial Justice Hotline open, and have received alarming calls from many New Yorkers who are being hounded by debt collectors, despite the crisis.

These actions underscore existing racial and economic inequities that play out every day in our city. As debt collectors continue callously to garnish people’s wages and freeze their bank accounts, they are depriving people of money they desperately need to stay in place, and buy food, medicine, and other necessities.

Last week, we quickly organized with more than 60 groups to call for a statewide moratorium on debt collection, as part of a broad set of emergency measures to ensure New Yorkers’ public health and safety. Many New Yorkers who’ve called our hotline are speaking out and sharing their stories.
